Radley Lakes – August 2022

There are new Radley Lakes information boards and seats and sandy pathways from Barton Fields. They say this land was farmland, which the railway passed through, and from 1955 gravel extraction began. Some of the pits filled with water, others filled with fuel ash from Didcot power station. The railway branch line has now become part of a national cycle path.

At Thrupp Lake there are new seats. This one is where the bird hide once gave a more secret look out.

How many sorts of bird can you see in this picture?

There were also a couple of swans waterweed dipping.

And some coots diving down deeper near the wooden bridge where all the feathers, or perhaps they are flying seeds, have gathered on the surface.

In the other corner are a colony of water lilies.

On the other side of the national cycle path and here the water of Orchard Lake has gone down during the summer.

In this picture you may be able to see an adult heron and a young heron. Three other herons had flown off.
